What is Alpha?

Alpha is a national programme, run by local churches for over 30 years, which aims to provide answers to some of the big questions about life from a Christian perspective.

We focus on the person of Jesus Christ—what he did, what he said, and why that is important for our lives today in the 21st Century.

The course allows you to explore his message for yourself in an open and relaxed atmosphere. There is no pressure whatsoever for you to make any particular choices.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for anyone with questions about life
Is there more to life than this?
Does God exist?
‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’
‘Is there life after death?’
and is open to anyone of any level of faith, doubt or unbelief.

What’s the format?

Each Alpha session will start with a video focusing on the topic for the evening.

This will be followed by a facilitated group discussion where you will have the opportunity to discuss issues that are on your mind or simply just listen to the thoughts of others in your group.

This combination of some input from a talk combined with the chance to engage in group discussion provides a good environment for you to evaluate things for yourself.

Where and When

We have two options for Alpha this year:

In-person – These sessions will be held in the Guild House right in front of Knowle Parish Church on Thursday evenings starting on 27th January 2022.

Online – Alternatively, join us on Zoom from the comfort of your own home or from wherever you happen to be.  These sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings starting on 25th January 2022.

You can download a full course programme here.

Both courses have eight evening sessions plus an optional ‘day away’ session on Saturday 19th March 2022. For the evening sessions we encourage people to arrive / log on between 7.45—8.00pm so that we can start the sessions promptly at 8.00pm.  We aim to finish between 9.30 and 9.45pm.

How much is it?

There is no charge for the course.

Do I need to sign up?

For both courses it would be great if you could sign up in advance, and this is especially important for the Online course so we can send you connection details via email.

Zoom Trial Session

If you’re not familiar with using Zoom, we are offering a Zoom Trial evening on Thursday 20th January 2022. You can test your connection, download the Zoom App, and get to feel comfortable with the technology. If you would like to attend this trial session, please do let us know when you sign up.

Reserve a place on Alpha

If you are interested in joining either our In-person or Online Alpha courses, then please do one of:

  • Email your interest to:  alpha@kpc.org.uk
  • Text your name to:    07546 887202
  • Phone     07546 887202

All we need initially is your name and whether you prefer the In-person or Online Alpha, and we will get in touch with you to discuss any questions you have about the course and reserve a place for you.

For the Online course we will eventually need to have an email address from you so we can include you when we distribute the connection details for the Zoom sessions.

What have others said about Alpha?

You would not have found me anywhere near an Alpha Course.  But I hit rock bottom and decided to come. It has transformed my life.”

I thought Alpha might help me get the answers I needed.  It did!

“I really enjoyed meeting new people and hearing other people’s journeys and experience of God”

My life seemed to have little purpose. I ended up on an Alpha course.  It restored my purpose in life, my relationship with God and relationships with other people that I had let go.”

Covid 19 Provisions for the In-person Course

Updated as at 1st November 2021.

Under the current government Covid advice we are proposing to run the In-person course with no special Covid restrictions – i.e. similar to going to a pub or restaurant.

Whilst you will be most welcome to wear a mask, we are not mandating that for anyone, and there will be no particular provisions for social distancing.

Should you feel uncomfortable with this open approach then we would encourage you to consider the Online option that you can do from the safety of your own home.
